Recorded live at The Volstead, Austin, TX, December 20, 2022.
Okay, y'all, this was a special and fun night. This is a direct mixing board recording, so the sounds of the room were not captured (unfortunately... keep reading). About 7 minutes into my set, in walks an arguing couple who head straight to the bar. I get into an ambient transitional moment, and above the music, the whole venue hears, "Yeah, this music is really weird!"
To which, their partner replies, "Uh huh. This music is not helping..."
Friends, there was an audible gasp from the audience - made up of acquaintances and fellow experimental music nerds. Without hesitation, I decided to give them their money's worth, and proceeded to go into my circular-breathing/sheets-of-sound/overtone assault of breathless saxophone arpeggios. Unfortunately for the recording, I opted to mute my signal chain to allow the unadulterated acoustic saxophone to serenade our lover's quarrel. This went on for a good 5-8 minutes before the couple finally realized that the cheers from the crowd were directed at my musical dressing-down of their shenanigans. The couple realized they weren't where they were supposed to be that evening, and I followed them across the stage, and out the door.
Huge thanks for everyone who was there that night. Enjoy this record, which is an edit of my other favorite movements of that hilariously-legendary evening. And to our bickering couple, I'm available for weddings and divorce parties.
